Questions parents ask

How do I find out which Harrogate primary school catchment area I’m in?

Put your postcode into the school checker. It tells you which catchment you’re in and your chances at every primary school nearby. Near a boundary? Check your exact address on North Yorkshire Council’s school catchment areas map.

When do I apply for a Reception place for September 2027?

Apply online to North Yorkshire Council by Friday 15 January 2027. You can name up to five primary schools, in the order you want them.

When are primary school places announced?

Offers go out on national offer day, Friday 16 April 2027, by email from the council.

Can my child get into a Harrogate school outside our catchment?

Often, if places are left once children in the catchment have theirs. Each year the council publishes how far the last place went, and the checker compares that with your distance. How places work explains the queue.

Which are the best primary schools in Harrogate?

There’s no official ranking, so be wary of league tables. Ofsted is the fairest guide, alongside a visit. The checker shows each school’s latest Ofsted outcome, and the Outstanding schools are listed above.

Where can I see North Yorkshire school admissions data?

The council publishes its admissions figures each year on Data North Yorkshire. The checker turns the last four years into plain answers for every Harrogate, Knaresborough and Ripon primary school.

How do I find open days and term dates?

Ask the school. Open the school in the checker for its phone number, email and website.

Does this cover Harrogate Grammar and other secondary schools?

Not yet. The Yorkshire School Checker covers primary schools and Reception places only.
